The chamber is vertically split into two lanes separated by a transparent, perforated divider that allows for visual and auditory cues. Tactile cues are also transmitted between the two lanes due to the continuous floor, permitting olfactory interactions between mice and rats. Three distinct zones are established across the two lanes.
The system is automated with infrared (IR) beams and an automated water spout.
When the computerized algorithm detects cooperative behavior, peristaltic pumps dispense a shared reward (70 μl of 20% sucrose solution) through the liquid dispensers.
To obtain the mutual reward again, the subjects must coordinate their movement from zone “A” to zone “C.”
